For most girls their introduction into makeup is playing in their mother’s makeup or having the makeup kits made for little children. Well my journey was different because my mother didn't wear makeup so I had to learn on my own. At first when I saw women wearing makeup I thought they were wearing to cover up imperfections on the outside and inside but now I realize makeup is about having fun and expressing yourself. Before I tell you about my journey let’s talk a little bit about my mother. Ever since I was little I always remember watching my grandmother put on makeup to get ready for work and wondering why I never saw my mother doing that or teaching me about it. Growing up my mother was a tomboy who loved to play basketball and watch the Redskins every Sunday with her father. My whole life I have only seen my mother wear makeup twice, for her high school grad pictures and her wedding.

So now that you have a little background on my mother let’s talk about me. I was raised by both my parents and I have a younger brother so with my mom loving sports and my father and brother not knowing anything about makeup I had to learn on my own. I wasn’t completely lost when it came to makeup I could tell you what mascara, lipstick, liner and eye shadow were and where they went but I couldn’t put it on for you. Even though I didn’t know anything about makeup I have always loved lipsticks, lip balms and chapstick.

Growing up I suffered from acne and oily skin and was told that makeup will cause me to break out more and that I didn’t need makeup to look pretty. Watching the looks my grandmother, aunts, little cousin, and best friend Tanisha could achieve with makeup inspired me to learn how to do my own makeup for special occasions and just for fun. I learned everything i know from watching YouTubers like Jayla Koriyan, Raven Elyse, Aaliyah Jay and Yunnie Rose makeup tutorials.

In January 2018 I went on Amazon and bought one makeup product for each part of my face and watched YouTube to learn where to put the makeup, blending, contouring and highlighting. After I learned where everything went I decided to give it a try and film myself applying makeup for the first time. I think I did a good job for someone who when went from thinking a highlighter was used in school remember important information to knowing that highlight is used to make your face pop. I know I have a long way to go and more to learn like to do lashes, eyebrows and mascara but I look forward to continuing on this journey and becoming a great makeup artist.
